Beyond Beginner Workshop 6/2

Let’s dive a little deeper into the world of Lindy Hop! This is a continuation of our May Beginner Lindy Hop Workshop. Many of the core concepts and movements that we worked on in the last workshop will be explored and fine tuned. If you missed the previous workshop don’t worry. The first hour will discuss and review everything that students will need to know in order to be successful in the remainder of the workshop.

12:00 pm – BASIC SWINGOUT CLASS –

The Swingout is Lindy Hop’s most signature move. In the Beginner Workshop we learned 3 basic types of Swingouts (Swingout, Lindy Circle, and Swingout from closed). If you have never heard of these things, or you simply forgot, don’t worry. We will be re-teaching these three movements, and focusing primarily on footwork. Once again, this class will be review. If you were unable to make the previous workshop, this hour long class will break everything down for you.

1:00 pm – SWINGOUT CONNECTION AND DYNAMICS –

Now that we have a full understanding of the footwork of the Swingout we will be able to explore some of the finer points. Having a comfortable and relaxed Swingout is key for increasing the longevity and speed of your dance. This class will primarily focus on exercises rather than moves. In fact, we will be working on just one move. The Swingout!

2:00 pm – HALF HOUR BREAK –

2:30 pm – SIX VS. EIGHT COUNT MOVEMENTS –

One of the most difficult things about this dance is that not all the figures have the same number of counts. This class will focus on transitioning between 6 and 8 count movements, and how to turn 6 count moves into 8 counts moves and visa versa. This class will be pretty move heavy, but a lot of the things that we learned in the connection class previously will really help with leading/following this moves.

3:30 pm – MORE PARTNER CHARLESTON –

Charleston is a great way to speed up your dance, and keep it more versatile in a appearance. In the beginner workshop we learned some basic Charleston patterns. In this class we will be looking at some more options and transitions that will build on our previous understanding.

Beginner Lindy Hop Workshop 5/12

Let’s face it, the world of vintage Jazz dancing can be absolutely overwhelming. Lindy Hop is full of intricate footwork and complicated timing. Where do you even start?!

Well we are here help you put the pieces together. This 3 hour workshop will give you the proper footing to tackle this dance effectively and efficiently. We will be learning both solo movement and partnering, as we can’t dance with another person until we learn to move ourselves.

Whether you come from a different dance background, or have never danced before, this workshop is a perfect way to tackle the crucial fundamentals of Lindy Hop Swing.

–Schedule-

1:00 pm – The Shim Sham – This dance is a choreographed routine done similarly to line dances, except that this line dance is routed in vintage movement that is pivotal to a Lindy Hoppers development. Almost every Lindy Hopper knows this dance, and you can expect to see it almost anywhere you travel.

2:00 pm – Swingouts and Swingout Variations – The Swingout is Lindy Hop’s most iconic and dynamic move. Once learned, a dancer’s world opens up to tons of possibilities. The Swingout is highly versatile, and many different moves and spins can be interchanged within the figure. Once mastered, leads and follows can put their own spin on the move with heavily stylized swivels, twists, kicks, and rhythmic variations.

3:00 pm – Partner Charleston – Lindy Hop is direct descendant of Charleston from the 1920’s. This class will focus on how to transition in and out of some of the most common and fundamental Charleston patterns. Charleston is great for faster tempos and adding dynamic elements to your Lindy Hop.

New Updates!

I’ve got a ton of news, so I’m going to try to keep it brief. I shut the doors of my studio this last Thursday. With the help of the kindest, most awesome, fantastic people in the entire world I was able to get out of the space quickly. There is no possible way I could have gotten all that done without the help of the dance community, so once again thank you to all of you who were able to help out.

This weekend I was able to talk to Jeremy Aevermann over at Solid and get two weekly dance nights on Mondays and Tuesdays (BTW Jeremy you are just so wonderful helping me out with this, and giving us a place to dance on such short notice). Monday will be Lindy Hop and Tuesdays will be West Coast Swing. Here are the links to those events:

Swingin’ at Solid: West Coast Night

Today I had a meeting with The Gem Center for the Arts, and talked about doing some events in their gallery space. They are brand new and will be finishing construction in January. The place looks sooooo cool. It’s a big artist collaborative that will have everything from theater, ceramics, metal work, painting, photography…the list really goes on. Stay tuned, and I’ll have more information for you as things develop. You all should really check out their site because they are going to have some really fantastic opportunities for artists.

Then after that I ran over to talk with Natalie Gallegos at Carpe Danza Dance Studio (who is like the cooliest and nicest person ever, and she’s really being a rock star by helping me out so we love her very very much). She’s got a space that is very flexible and very easy to schedule in, so Steph and I going to start teaching our private lessons over there. So all of you with outstanding lessons, feel free to contact us and we can get your private lessons rolling again. Best of all it’s not far from the old location, so the move makes a whole lot of sense.

What I’ve got planned for the weeks to come:

-Promote the hell out of the new Swing nights at Solid

-Start figuring out series classes at Carpe Danza Dance Studio. I wouldn’t mind some input from you all for days and times that work for everyone, and what kind of stuff you would like us to teach. (Anyone on an Unlimited Pass from the old studio can come to these classes and we would still totally honor the passes. We’ll figure it out, but I am very concerned about everyone getting their moneys worth on these passes). I’ll probably have a plan on this within the next few days.

-Start going to the other dance events around town that I have been unable to go to in the past. Heck, maybe I’ll even take a class! 😮

-Get the practice nights for the Vintage Vanguard of Heirloom Dance Studio going again (Though now we will just be the Vintage Vangurard). The shirts should be here in a couple of days, so I got to get that out to everyone.

-And most of all, I think I’m gonna just have fun with it all!

Thank you all for your love, support, patience, and for being my awesome awesome friends. Below I have posted a gif closely representing how I feel my day is going.

Attention Dancers:

Boise Dancers,

After over 10 years of business in downtown Boise, Heirloom Dance Studio is regrettably closing it’s doors. As some of you are aware, the building has undergone new ownership, and they are taking it in a new direction. I understand that some of you have studio credit and unused lessons with us. I ask for your patience as I find a new space to continue teaching so that you all can redeem your purchases. We are excited to see what new doors open. In the immediate future we will mostly likely rent space at another studio or community center. It has been great to serve you all. I hope that I can continue to do so in a new capacity.
